Varyag Memorial, Lendalfoot
A memorial to the Russian Cruiser Varyag which defended itself against 15 Japansese vessels in Korea in 1904 before scuttling herself. The ship was raised in 1905 by the Japanese and renamed Soya. In 1916 the Russians bought it back from the Japanese and renamed it Varyag, it then came to Britain for a refit but the 1917 revolution got in the way and in 1920 the ship was then sold for scrap. On route for scrap she grounded here and subsequently sank just off Lendalfoot.
