HMS Carrick, Scottish Maritime Museum, Irvine
This sorry sight is the sailing ship HMS Carrick, launched in Sunderland in 1864 as The City of Adelaide. She was designed to carry cargo and passengers between London and Adelaide, Australia. In 1923 she was purchased by the Royal Navy and fitted out here at Irvine to become a training ship. In 1990 during a move she sank and remained submerged for 13 months in what could arguably be called an act of corporate vandalism. Irvine Museum bought it for £1 and are currently struggling to fund a restoration.
