The oldest part of the present Hotel was built by the Duke of Montrose in 1820 as a hunting lodge. But as tourism started to boom it was soon converted into a Hotel. In the early days you could get the steam train from Glasgow to Balloch and then a paddle steamer up the loch to the Hotel. Today the hotel is accessed via a passenger ferry across the loch from Inveruglas or by the single track road via Stronachlachar. Map location.
