A view of the Dounreay Nuclear site from across Sandside bay at Fresgoe Harbour. Just in front of the old PFR reactor sphere lies the infamous Dounreay shaft where an unknown cocktail of radioactive waste was dumped until in 1977 an explosion inside the shaft lifted off the concrete lid spreading waste around the surrounding area. At the time the operators played it down but it is now known to be the most serious incident in the history of the site.
