Originally built in 1643 from money donated by John Cowane as an Almshouse for 'decayed' members of the Guild. By 1869 there were 142 pensioners on the books but it was never a popular place due to strict rules imposed on residents. Since then the building has had several uses including a museum, today it is used as a venue.
