One of Scotlands oldest standing bridges it was built in the early 15th century to replace a previous one damaged by floods. Today it has 6 arches (two on the right were obscured by scaffolding on this day) but was built as a 9 arch bridge. Reclamation work in 1794 narrowed the Nith and created the whitesands area of Dumfries after which 3 arches were demolished. Today the bridge is only used for pedestrians.
