The Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint railway was opened in 1871 and when it was built it was a dual track all the way from Barrhead to Kilmarnock. Due to short sighted rationalisation in the 1970s the track was singled except for a passing loop at Lugton. In 2009 the line was redoubled between Stewarton and Lugton to allow a greater frequency of trains. This single track stretch runs along side of Loch Libo. Map location.
