When this Broch was built, about 2000 years ago, the walls would have stood twice as high as the highest part standing today. They were built as a shelter against marauding neighbours. The thick circular drystone walls were hollow with stairs and passage ways. Inside was a wooden structure with a thatched roof. There are some 500 examples of Brochs around Scotland, this one is by no means the best preserved. Map location.
