One of Helensburgh's claims to fame is that it is the birth place of Logie Baird. Born in 1888 he was an inventor who is best known for his demonstration of a mechanical scanning television system in 1926. It was used by the BBC in 1936 but dropped after a year in favour of Marconi's electronic scanning system.
