This church was the first Presbyterian Church built in Scotland following the reformation, it was first open in 1591. In 1841 it was closed when the congregation moved to a New West Kirk in 1841. The Church lay derelict until 1864 when it was heavily restored and re-opened, the tower and stained glass windows were added. In 1917 the shipyard Harland & Wolf wanted to increase the size of their yard and offered to move the church building to where it stands today on the esplanade.
