Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners Home, Greenock
Founded by Sir Gabriel Wood, Commissary General, who was born in Greenock in 1776. When he died in 1845 it was his wish that some of his estate be used to construct an 'Asylum' in Greenock for aged Master Mariners and Merchant Seamen. The foundation stone was laid in 1850, eventually the Home passed into the ownership of the British Sailors Society and even today as a residential care home it is committed to caring for elderly sea farers, their dependents and the local community.
