The Ha-ha, Hopetoun House, South Queensferry
The Ha-ha was a clever device used by landscape gardeners that allowed the vista from large houses such as Hopetoun not to be spoilt by a fence. It is essentially just a ditch with a retaining wall at one side preventing livestock or other 'riff-raff' from getting to the large expanse of grass in front of the house.
