Dean Castle is a traditional 14th century tower house/keep (on the left) with a later 15th century palace (on the right). It was built by the Boyd family who lived in the castle for some 400 years. It was inherited by Thomas Ellis in 1899 and he spent time restoring to its former glory and in 1974 the family gifted the castle to the people of Kilmarnock. Since 1976 it has been opened to the public.
