Open in 1973 it was Scotlands Largest power station, capable of generating 2.4GW. When built much of the coal came from the nearby Longannet coal pit but when it closed most came from abroad via the Hunterson Ore Terminal on the Clyde. The power station consumed 2.4M tons of coal a year and when built was the largest coal fired station in Europe. When closed in 2016 it was the last coal fired power station in Scotland and will eventually be demolished.
