Formerly thought the be of ancient origon a 2003 archaeological invesigation found that the figure is more likely to have been cut in the 16th or 17th century.  From a distance it looks like it is cut in to chalk but the reality today is that is is painted breeze blocks and lime mortar.  The figure is 72m tall.
