The Commando Memorial, Spean Bridge.
In summer 1940, when Britain was at it lowest point in World War II, Winston Churchill ordered the formation of an elite force to raid the enemy held coastline of Europe and regain the initiative.  In 1942, amid great secrecy, the Commando Basic Training Centre was established near here at Achnacarry.  No fewer than 1,700 Commandos lost their lives in numerous operations between 1940 and 1945.
