Loanhead Stone Circle, Daviot, Aberdeenshire
A view of the Recumbent Stone Circle at Loanhead. It and others in the area date from around 3000BC. The two tallest stones on the south west arc flank a massive slab laid on its side, known as the recumbent stone. This stone and its flankers frame the moon rising or setting in the southern sky when viewed from inside the circle enabling its builders to make observations of the seasonal changes.
