HMS Otranto was an armed Merchant Cruiser used in WWI to bring American troops to Glasgow and Liverpool. In October 1918 she collided with HMS Kashmir, lost power and started drifting towards the cliffs at Machir Bay. HMS Mounsey made a daring attempt to rescue the 1000 troops on board, but despite her best efforts 431 were lost, 300 of them being Americans. Map location.
