For a long time the name Shanks and its association with Barrhead was known around the world. The business was started by Paisley plumber, John Shanks, around 1865 when he invented an under water line closet for use in ships. In 1868 John Shanks opened a foundry in Barrhead to make parts for his inventions, it was only later that he developed the bath and lavatory fittings that they became so famous for.
