The recumbent stone at the Loanhead stone circle. Recumbent stone circles are only found in the north east of Scotland and date from the Neolithic period some 4000 to 5000 years ago. The people who built and used the circle farmed the land around, tools and burials and been found in nearby fields. The sites were thought to be used for religious purposes and for observing the changing seasons.
