The MR2 version of the Nimrod first entered service in 1975 and was a modified version of the MR1. Its primary rold was maritime reconnesance, mainly submarine hunting. It was also used for Maritime search around the British Isles. This example was based at Kinloss in Scotland and was the last MR2 to fly when they were retired in 2010 due to defence cuts, leaving the UK with no maritime patrol aircraft for 10 years.
