The House was first started in 1740 for Lord Garlies, who became the 6th Earl of Galloway. Later additions date from 1841. The house remained in the hands of the Earls of Galloway until 1908 when they were forced to sell. It had varies owners after that. During the 1940's it was used as a hospital for injured soldiers and in 1947 was sold to Glasgow Corporation and used as a boarding school until 1976. Today it is once again in private ownership.
