Built in 1778 as a mansion house the building has had a chequered career. In 1817 is was sold to the Royal Bank of Scotland who used it as a Bank. In 1827 it was converted into the Exchange and was used as such until 1949 when it then became the Stirling Library. After being vacated by the Library and after a major refurbishment the building became the Gallery of Modern Art in 1996. As with all Glasgow Council run museums, entry is free.
