Built on top of an outcrop of rock by the MacDougalls in the 1200's. The site has been a defended fort since the 6th century due to its strategic location at the mouth of Loch Etive. During the Jacobite uprising of 1745 it was occupied by government forces. It is open to the public all year and maintained by Historic Scotland. www.historic-scotland.gov.uk
