Opened in September 1964 Hunterston was Scotland's first civil Nuclear generating station. At that time it was also the largest in the world with an output of 360MW. The final reactor was decomissioned in 1990 and the fuel has since been removed. The low building on the left is a new bunker for storing low level waste and at the time this photo was taken the glass was being replaced with a rather unpleasant white cladding. This is how it will remain until 2081 when it will be completely demolished.
