Kildrummy played a prominent role in the wars of Independence. in 1306 Robert Bruce was in possession of the castle when he came out in open rebellion against the English King Edward I. His brother, Sir Neil Bruce, defended the castle when it was besieged by English forces that year but the castle fell due to treachery when the castle blacksmith set fire to grain stored in the great hall.
