A view of Chapelcross from the English side of the Solway Firth. Built in 1959 it was the second Magnox Nuclear Power Station after Calderhall in England. It operated between 1959 and 2004, the cooling towers have already been demolished and the rest of the site is in the process of being decommissioned. The primary purpose of Chapelcross was to produce weapons grade Plutonium for the UK's nuclear weapons programme, generating electricity was a by-product.
