When war broke out in 1939 Grangemouth was designated as a fighter Airfield with Spitfires arriving in October for the defence of central Scotland. In late 1940 No. 58 Operational Training Unit was established to train pilots in gunnery, combat tactics and formation flying. This replica Spitfire is one that flew at Grangemouth in September 1941 but crashed only a few month later near Polmont killing its Polish pilot, Sergeant Eugeniusz Lukomski. Nothing remains of the Airfield today.
