Dunnottar Castle, near Stonehaven
The "har" drifting in from the North Sea often gives Dunnottar Castle castle a mystical quality. Its hard to imagine a better location for an impregnable fortress, being surrounded on three sides by water with 160ft cliffs down to the sea. The largest building visible is the the keep, built in 1392 by Sir William Keith, Great Marischal of Scotland.
