Auchindrain is unique in Scotland in that it portrays a way of farming that has long disappeared. Before single tenancy farms there were small townships like this where a group of people worked the land. There were some 4000 acres of land worked by the people who lived here in the 18th century. Some of the buildings were still in use up until the 1960's.
