Grave of James McGeorge, Mail Guard, Moffat Cemetery
Every head stone tells a tale, on the morning of 1st Feb 1831 James McGeorge and his driver, John Goodfellow, headed from Dumfries to Edinburgh on the horse drawn mail coach during a snow storm. A few miles from Moffat the going became too difficult, two male passengers took two horses back to Moffat to get help whilst females sheltered in the coach. James and John decided to continue with the mail on horse. Both men succumbed to the weather only a few miles further along the road.
