In 1900 Shanks had already been operating as a succesfull business in Barrhead for more than 20 years. Until then the bathroom fittings had been manufactured by other companies to Shanks design. At this point Shanks decided to build their own pottery as a way of expanding the business. A pottery remained in use here for the next 90 years until finally closing in 1992.
