These tanks are a bit of a landmark and can actually be seen from the hills above Neilston if know where to look. Built in 1971 just outside the small village of Glen Mavis as part of the nationwide conversion from coal gas to Natural Gas. The tanks store Natural Gas as a liquid at very low temperatures meaning that a large volume can be stored in relatively small tanks. The LNG can be taken from here by tanker to outlying areas. This was the first such plant in the UK, there now being around five.
