Fairey Gannet AEW3, Dumfries & Galloway Aircraft Museum
This is the Airborne early warning version of the Gannet. It was introduced in 1959 as a stop gap until a replacement was developed, that aircraft along with the Aircraft Carriers she would have flown from were cancelled leaving the Gannet in service until 1978 when Ark Royal was retired. XL497 last flew from RAF Lossiemouth after which it became the Gate Gaurdian at HMS Gannet at Prestwick. It was very nearly sold for scrap in 2005 but found a new home here.
