RAF Dounreay, the forgotten airfield
Built in 1944 for RAF Coastal command but never used it was transfered to the Royal Navy as HMS Tern II but never comissioned. In 1955 the airfield was taken over by the UKAEA as the site for the fast breeder reactor. The Airfeild was used by them until the 1990's. After that the control tower was used as a visitor centre but that has since been demolished and as can be seen from this 2014 photo part of the runway is now used as a car park.
