The ruins of Melrose Abbey
An Abbey was first built on this site by the Cistercian Monks in 1146. Richard II, in retaliation for a raid by the Scots in 1385, sent a force North to destroy the Abbeys at Melrose, Dryburgh and Newbattle. The Abbey that you see here today is the remains of what was rebuilt after that event. Map location.
