The standing stones of Achavanich, Caithness
Set in the big landscapes of Caithness these standing stones date from around 4,000 years ago, the stones in the foreground are the remains of a chambered cairn from 1,000 years earlier. No one knows the exact purpose of the stones that form a horseshoe shape but cremated human remains have been found in the peat. The stones have been cut from the bedrock of Caithness flagstone.
