Looking down at Smoo Cave, Durness
The cave name is thought to derive from the Norse 'smjugg' or 'smuga' meaning a hole or hiding-place. There are various tales of the cave being used as a hide away over the centuries and also as a place where local highwayman, McMurdo, would murder his victims by throwing them down the sink hole at the rear.
