Inverewe Gardens and Loch Ewe
Although the west coast of Scotland has mild winters due to the Gulf stream it still suffers from salt spray and high winds.  For that reason Osgood Mackenzie planted a barrier of 100 acres of trees when he first laid out the gardens in 1862 in what was a barren peninsula.
