Diesel Sprinter approaching Barrhead from Kilmarnock
The Barrhead/ Kilmarnock line was opened in 1870 and up until the 1970's had two lines. Due to short sighted cost cutting this was reduced to one line in the 1970's resulting in a much poorer service for places like Stewarton and Dunlop. The error of this has long been realised and today a 'dynamic loop' is being constructed between Lugton and Stewarton which means train numbers can be increased and can pass on this 5 mile stretch without stopping.
