There are two similar carvings just below the door, this photo was taken in 2016 when it looked like they had been replaced. The monument was built in 1912 to commemorate the Battle of Largs in 1263 between the Scots and Norwegians. It was more of a skirmish than a battle with only a small part of the large Norwegian force being engaged but it was enough to force the Norwegian fleet to leave the Clyde.
