The Chinook first entered service with the RAF in 1980 and is primarily used for troop transport. The RAF is the largest operator of the type outside the United states with some 60 in service. It has had a controversial life with the RAF after the crash of one on the Mull of Kintyre with the loss of all 29 on board. Initially pilot error was blamed but many believe there were faults in the flight control software. The Pilots were eventually absolved.
