Dounreay Prototype Fast Reactor, Caithness
This was the 3rd reactor built by the UK Atomic Energy Authority at Dounreay. At 250MW it had a much higher power output than the DFR and was intended to prove the commercial viability of the fast breeder technology for power generation. It went critical in 1974 and was shut down in 1994. By the 1980's the UK government decided there was no requirement for this technology and no other such reactors have been built in the UK.
