At first glance a typical and desirable small west coast island, but with a very dark secret. In 1942 because of its isolated location it was used to test deadly anthrax as a possible weapon to defeat the Nazis during WWII. Sheep were used to test the effects of an anthrax bomb. The island remained contaminated and off limits until 1986 when £500,000 was spent to decontaminate it with hundreds of tons of formaldehyde and also by removing some top soil.
