Built as a garrison fort in the 18th century to subdue any further uprising of the Jacobites after their defeat at Culloden. It was never needed and is unique today in that it is the only ancient monument in Scotland still used as a garrison for the Black Watch infantry battallion whilst being open to the public. It has been announced that the army will withdraw in 2032 so the future upkeep of the barracks after that remains in doubt.
