Royal Research Ship Discovery, Discovery Point, Dundee
Launched from Dundee in 1901 it was one of the last wooden hulled 3 masted ships built in the UK. It was a purpose built Antarctic research ship with a specially strengthened hull to enable it to sail in frozen seas. It was used by Captain Robert Scott in the highly successful National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904. Scot died in 1912 in an attempt to be the first to reach the south pole but Discovery did not take part in that ill fated expedition.
