HMS Ark Royal anchored on the Clyde, 2008
Ark Royal was the last of the 3 Invincible class Aircraft carriers to be built for the Royal Navy. She was built at Swan Hunter on the Tyne and commissioned in 1985. Depending on her role she would embark a mix of Harrier GR7/9 jets, Merlin and Sea King helicopters. As of early 2011 she is being decomissioned which only leaves her older sister ship, HMS Illustrious in still in services, but with no jets. She is pictured here during the Joint Warrier exercise in October 2009.
