A two stage ballistic missile using solid fuel rocket motors. They were first deployed in 1968 onboard HMS Resolution who's home port was Faslane on the Clyde. Each of the RN's 4 Polaris Submarines carried 16 missiles, with a range of 2,500 nautical miles. Initially the RN had enough warheads and missiles for all 4 boats but during the Chevaline upgrade in the 1980's this was reduced to 3 boats.
