This old airfield was chosen in the 1950's as the site for the UK's fast breeder reactor programme. The first reactor was the sphere you see in the photo, it was closed in the late 70's. The second was the bigger Prototype Fast Reactor which is just above the sign, it was closed in 1994 when the UK abandoned its fast breeder programme. Unfortunately they haven't always followed the advice on their sign since there are still issues of contamination of local beaches.
