The shell house was the eccentric creation of Alex Batchelor. He apparently also charged people to see his coffin, also adorned with sea shells. Locally the house is also known as Buckie House since in some parts of Scotland sea shells are called 'Buckies', must be an East Coast thing. The house dates from 1692 but the sea shells were added in the 1840s.
